“Why DON’T you want to look at porn?”

This question was asked of me while I was closing a blog after barely logging on. The blog belongs to someone I love so I really tried to read what he had written but pretty-much-naked chicks in provocative poses kept popping up everywhere and I couldn’t read without being forced to navigate around them. Even the friends that left comments had porn-like avatars and animated critters bouncing their naked boobies. Now, I’m not so prude that I can’t move my browser box to cover the offensive material and continue on with the reading. But the pictures kept following me and popping up where I was trying to read. There was a slide show running on the side with a different girl in each frame, barely covering her nips and/or foliage --- extremely distracting. No wonder it’s so hard for kids and adults to avoid the addictive trap of pornography. So I closed the page altogether and was instantly attacked with the following: “You’re not even going to read what he wrote?” in a snippy tone. No, I don’t want to look at porn while trying to. “Why DON’T you want to look at porn?” in an accusatory tone. Um… I’m not sure how to answer that. I’m sure y’all can imagine people being asked “Why DO you look at porn?” But I was caught off guard with the question the other way around. So I’ll use this forum to write a simple reason --- I believe there is a time and place for provocative nudity… in private with your spouse. That is what I believe. There is nothing wrong with my POV just because it might contradict yours. My perspective does not harm anyone so there is no basis for an argument. I DO NOT love this person ANY LESS because he choses this behavior. That's not the kind of person I am. I DO NOT feel that I am a BETTER person because I am against porn. I'm not that kind of person either. Because the question was asked of me I just wanted to give an answer. And there you have it.

All I can say is Matt and I always think 'This is someone's "little girl"' and would never want to think that it would be something mine would do.

That is the best turn of a phrase: "Why DON'T you look at porn?" So we've been using it around here all day.

"Why DON'T you like car accidents?"
"Why DON'T you like raisins?"
"Why DON'T you like you like turbulence?"

Good point. Maybe that's the way I could address an ugly--and may I say mostly unfair--fight currently raging in my extended family. I could ask:

"Why DO you have a problem with people who sincerely believe marriage should be defined as between a man and a woman?" (as long as it is done in terms that are not hateful--in terms that are PRO-marriage and NOT ANTI-gay.)

Oh. Except I already know the answer. It's because they assume we all think alike. They believe we are not Christian. They think we are self-righteous and judgmental. They assume we lack any empathy for members of the GLBT community. (Oops! They struck a few nerves there.)

I like what you said in your last paragraph the best. That's the message I'd like to share with my bitter family members.

Except they will never hear it through their anger, judgment and hatred.

Good post.

I always say "I see enough boobs when I take a shower, thanks."

As President Hinckley has stated (and many other church leaders...non just LDS) Pornography destroys lives. Having served a mission in Brazil, where pictures of naked women are in every nook and cranny, I can say that there is a lack of respect for women in that country. They are viewed as something to satisfy an appetite.

Wholesomeness is one thing that seperates us from chimps, dogs, pigs, etc.

E-mail me ok? I can't find your address and I am going mad for conversation with you!
And in return I will not send you any porn.
Ok maybe just a little porn.

Thank y'all for the thoughts. Especially when you confirm my POV, of course. But I also appreciate opposing views for the sake of arguement and open discussion.

Well, it looks like I'm late to the (porn) party again, but I did want to say: nicely put. I will file it in my "here's a perfect way to respond to this (or similar) situation" file. Thank you.

P.S. did you know that the porn industry pioneered the technology/programming for the internet pop-up box? They use it very effectively.

so i'm here again, not about porn, but about a different type of protest. i am protesting that my name on the side bar still says "doesn't update enough" when i have been updating quite regularly for over a month now, which is far better than some of the other links listed. this is my petition to remove that byline and instead insert something a little more viable. i was thinking something like "most hilarious" or "the bomb" or "i want to be her" ... anything along those lines would be quite satisfactory.

cheerio.

The tables have turned indeed; it's been too long since we've heard anything lucky or reddish spill out of that beak.
